The Fair Use Policy explained
Why TP VPN uses a fair-use threshold instead of a data quota, what happens beyond it (slower, never cut off), how usage is counted and where to see it.

Subscription VPN services usually do not bill by the gigabyte, yet node bandwidth is shared by everyone. A Fair Use Policy (FUP) is the rule that balances "no metering" with "a good experience for the majority". This article explains TP VPN's thresholds, what happens when you pass one, and how to check your own usage.
Why a threshold exists
A node has finite bandwidth. Most people use tens to a few hundred gigabytes a month, but a handful of extreme cases, such as round-the-clock bulk synchronisation or a device used as a relay server, can consume a large share of a node and slow down everyone else on it.
The threshold exists to keep speeds steady for the vast majority, not to restrict normal use. Every threshold is therefore set far above the typical consumption of everyday work, streaming and gaming; only extreme usage reaches it.
Thresholds per plan
| Plan | Fair-use threshold per billing period |
|---|---|
| Standard | 1 TB |
| Premium | 3 TB |
| Enterprise | No threshold |
During the 3-day trial, the threshold of the subscription you selected applies. On yearly plans the threshold is still counted per month. The Enterprise plan is built for teams and organisations, has no threshold, and adds a dedicated egress IP and an availability commitment. Other differences between plans are on the pricing page.
What happens beyond the threshold: slower, never cut off
Passing the threshold does not disconnect you, costs nothing extra and needs no action from you. The connection is switched into a rate-limited state:
- The node applies a uniform speed cap to your devices while the tunnel stays connected.
- The cap is set system-wide and is enough for messaging, web browsing and audio, but not for high-definition video or large downloads; the exact value may be adjusted with network conditions.
- When the next billing period starts, usage resets and full speed returns automatically.
Technically, exceeding the threshold changes only the rate parameter configured for you on the node; the connection state is untouched. We treat overuse as a billing matter, not a security matter, and cutting the connection would only hurt paying customers.
How usage is counted
- Usage is the total of upload and download bytes, meaning all data that travels through the tunnel.
- It is tied to the account and combined across all devices: a phone and a tablet share one threshold.
- Only byte counts are involved, never the content or addresses you access, consistent with our logging posture; see What "no activity logs" really means.
- The threshold resets at the start of every billing period.
Where to see your usage
Open the app and go to the Plans tab. The current-plan card shows the data used in this period and your plan's threshold. Once the threshold is passed, the home screen also shows a "Data allowance used up" notice with a View usage link. Usage is aggregated and reported by the nodes at intervals, so the figure can lag by a few minutes. It is worth a glance before a large transfer.
Typical consumption
Rough figures for common activities, to help you estimate:
| Activity | Approximate usage |
|---|---|
| Web browsing and messaging | Tens of MB per hour |
| Music streaming | About 100 MB per hour |
| Video calls | About 1 GB per hour |
| 1080p video | About 3 GB per hour |
| 4K video | About 7 GB per hour |
| Online gaming | Usually under 100 MB per hour, but latency-sensitive |
| Cloud backup and bulk file sync | Depends on file size; can reach hundreds of GB |
Measured in 1080p video, the Standard plan's 1 TB is about 330 hours of viewing, which everyday use rarely approaches. The usual culprits are always-on automatic backups, download tools and devices used as servers.
If you often get close to the threshold
- Check for apps that sync large amounts of data in the background, such as photo backup or cloud-drive clients; that traffic counts while the tunnel is on.
- Move to a plan with a higher threshold: Premium allows 3 TB per month.
- For teams and organisations with large usage, contact us about an Enterprise arrangement, which has no threshold.
- Data top-ups are not offered at the moment.
How this differs from "no limits at all" marketing
Some services advertise data without any cap while reserving opaque restriction rights in their terms. Our approach is to publish the threshold figures, the rate-limit mechanism and the reset rule in full, and to show usage in the app in real time. Any change to the rules is announced and reflected in the policy.
